Meet Robert
The Cove, Newport Beach California
Robert has been a resident of The Cove since March 2024. Originally from Texas, he left due to struggles with substance use. Before finding his way to The Cove, Robert lived at a sober living center. While he understands the importance of such environments for his recovery, he found it challenging, facing safety concerns and interactions that hindered his progress.
Robert discovered The Cove through the Veterans Affaris Supportive Housing (VASH) program, which played a crucial role in his transition. VASH provided Robert with support in gathering necessary documents and offering transportation to social services offices. This support was instrumental in securing permanent housing and vital for his recovery. Robert notes that without VASH, he might be homeless.
Living at The Cove has had a profoundly positive impact on Robert’s life. The location has allowed him to reconnect with his passion for surfing and placed him close to additional service providers who support his sobriety. The beach offers him a space to clear his mind and manage his anxiety. The Cove’s environment has also enabled Robert to give back to his community, which he views as an essential aspect of his recovery. He is actively involved with others in recovery and has recently become a sponsor.
On-site services at The Cove, such as those provided by Mercy House and Veterans Affairs, have been invaluable to Robert. He appreciates the comprehensive support from these organizations, which has helped him maintain his housing and continue his sobriety. The aid provided, including financial assistance and resources, has been crucial in stabilizing his life. Looking ahead, Robert hopes to secure a more permanent home and find full-time employment that he enjoys. His journey at The Cove has been a significant step toward achieving these goals. He remains committed to recovery and helping others along the way.
