Meet Marcie
The Dr. Darrell Millner—Portland, Oregon
When Marcie Mason and her son Linus first walked through the doors of the Dr. Darrell Millner Building in March 2025, it felt like an answer to their prayers.
Previously, Marcie had been renting in Northeast Portland in a stressful living environment that took a serious toll on her health. The conditions became so overwhelming that she eventually ended up in the hospital. With the stressors exacerbating her heart condition, she knew it was time to find a safer place to live.
When she heard about an available apartment at the new Millner Building, she jumped at the opportunity. It felt as though she had been guided to this place and that it would even save her life.
Marcie has noticed her health improving since moving in—she feels at home and at peace. She describes the staff and neighbors as warm and welcoming, noting that younger community members have even offered to help her carry groceries. She also appreciates the quiet atmosphere and hotel-like feel of the building. Knowing the building is secure, with locks and door codes, helps Marcie feel safe and at ease.
Linus has also found the Millner to be a major improvement from their previous housing. The peace and stability here have even sparked his creativity, inspiring him to write a rap dedicated to the building and the community within it.
The Dr. Darrell Millner Building has been nothing short of life-changing for Marcie and her family “I am lucky,” she says. “I’m blessed that this apartment became available…I’m so blessed to be here.”
