Meet Joyce
The Huntington—Morgan Hill, California
Originally from the East Coast, Joyce moved to the Bay Area to live with her daughter after retiring from a long career in retail and hospitality. While she enjoyed being close to family, she longed for independence and set out to find a home of her own. After three months of searching, she discovered The Huntington online—all on her own—where she found the secure and welcoming environment she was looking for.
Joyce acknowledges the significant role that affordable housing has played in her journey. Moving from the East Coast to the West Coast presented financial challenges, from the high cost of housing to rising expenses for groceries and transportation. Without an affordable option like The Huntington, maintaining her lifestyle and independence would have been far more difficult.
Joyce saw The Huntington as an opportunity to build friendships and find a sense of community. Though she didn’t know anyone before moving in, she quickly connected with her neighbors through open conversations and shared activities. Her favorite part of her peaceful third-floor apartment is the balcony, which offers beautiful views of both the sunrise and sunset.
Eager to stay active, Joyce became involved in on-site programs offered by lead services provider EngAGE, including exercise classes, arts and crafts, card games, and bingo. Recognizing that some residents were less involved, she took the initiative to bring people together, reviving a monthly birthday celebration and organizing community events.
Drawing inspiration from her time with a Maryland senior group called Harmony, Joyce worked to foster a culture of connection at The Huntington. She partnered with local organizations, built relationships with the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, and invited guest speakers from community groups such as the Red Cross and local law enforcement. Even when turnout was lower than expected, she remained committed to strengthening the bonds among residents, believing that every effort contributed to a more vibrant and engaged community.
When asked what she looks forward to most, Joyce simply said: “Peace, joy, self-empowerment, and a harmonious community.”
